Baby Furniture – Must Haves

extra large play penMuch as we may want to deny it, having a new baby means having additional expenses.

With the many things that you would have to buy, you need to differentiate between pieces of baby furniture that are absolutely necessary and those that are mere fills.

Here are the absolute top five furniture pieces that you really should have in your nursery.

Crib

Whether you’re planning to co-sleep with your baby at night, you would still need to have a sturdy and safe baby crib. The crib is the only piece of furniture on which you may safely leave your baby unattended for a short period of time.

Cribs these days have been made based on government guidelines on product safety. Otherwise, these would never make it out on the market. You should still be extra careful and vigilant though. Even to this day, there are product recalls. The recalls usually happen when certain features are discovered to be potentially dangerous. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for online news on recent product recalls.

Portable Crib/ Playpen

Having a nursery crib is one thing, while having a portable crib or a portable playpen is another. Portables like these would come in handy for parents who would like to enjoy family trips and picnics with their babies.

Similar to nursery cribs, any standard portable cribs are also made with safety features in mind. Do remember though that like standard cribs, portables may also be recalled if they have features that may still be improved on. Some parents also use portable cribs as their main nursery crib. It is probably safest though not to use portables as all around cribs.

Cabinet/ Changing Table

A new occupant in the house like your new baby would also require new storage space for clothes, diapers and other miscellaneous items. A sturdy cabinet with back brackets would be a good piece of furniture to store baby items in. To save you some cash, you should consider buying a baby cabinet that can double as a changing table. This way, you only have to buy one piece of furniture that can perform two functions. A good design would be a piece with a changing table on top and open shelves or drawers below to hold baby items. The top storage compartment could hold diapers and other changing articles to make baby changing an easier chore.

High Chair

As soon as your baby finds out that he can sit and move around while feeding, things can begin to get really messy. You don’t want to forever keep chasing after your baby. This is why you need a good high chair for baby meal time. Pick one with a wide sturdy base to prevent tipping accidents.

Toy Box

Teaching your child how to pick his toys up after playing should start as soon as he knows where to find his toys or as soon as he can pick them up. This is why it is probably a good idea for you to get your child a toy box. Teach him to store his toys after play so that he can carry over the habit until adulthood. Pick a toy box that doesn’t have a heavy lid. It should also ideally have a lock in place spring to prevent the lid from falling on your child. Other safe designs include the open storage piece that is easy for your baby to use.

Baby Products and Trends

Here’s a quick peek at what you’re apt to find:

More functional designs

travel cot play penManufacturers have decided that functionality is essential to success, and they’re right. The best products are not only safe, they’re durable, user-friendly, and tailored to your busy lifestyle. You’ll find ergonomic strollers with comfort features such as cup holders for parents, built-in containers for baby wipes, and customized storage. Many products today are developed with several uses in mind: dressers that do double duty as changing tables and play yards that function as portable bassinets and changing tables.

More stylish choices

Manufacturers have upped the style ante. You’ll find products from cutesy to sophisticated, inspired by popular children’s television and movie characters, and chic lines that fit your sense of style. You’ll find all-terrain strollers in today’s hottest colors–chartreuse, periwinkle, orange, cognac and black. You’ll also find baby products sold in collections: car seats, strollers, play yards, and swings all in the same French country, camouflage, African, or nautically-inspired fabric, designed to blend in with your home dcor and satisfy the strong nesting instinct that manufacturers believe pervades today’s culture.

Greater attention to safety

inflatable play penSafety is a major concern among product manufacturers, and safer designs continue to evolve while new safety-related products continually are added to the mix. You’ll find an array of products — supermarket cart covers, high chair covers for restaurants, and disposable place mats — designed to keep babies safe from germs.

Overall, products marketed specifically for babies are generally safe, partly because of government regulations. They’re approved for safety or certified as meeting safety requirements mandated by federal regulations, or enforced voluntarily by manufacturers. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, for example, regulates some baby equipment and oversees recalls. It enforces industry standards that apply to most product categories, as well as mandatory government standards for a few specific categories, such as cribs and clothing.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sets mandatory safety standards for the crash performance of child car seats. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates baby formula and most baby food, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture monitors baby food containing meat, poultry and eggs.

Industry groups such as the Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association administers a program that certifies manufacturers that make products that meet voluntary safety standards. Consumer organizations such as Consumers Union work to refine those standards. Consumer Reports regularly tests cribs, crib mattresses, car seats, diapers, infant carriers, strollers, play yards, gates, toys, and baby monitors. They often hold products to more rigorous standards than the government requires or that manufacturers and retailers must meet to comply with voluntary industry standards. You’ll find results of their safety tests throughout their Web site.

Other children’s products may be certified by an independent laboratory as meeting safety standards, or a company may test its own product and vouch that they meet the safety standards. Those products may be just as safe as products certified under the JPMA program, but the JPMA seal is a good guide to safety for consumers–look for it on product packaging.

How To Choose A Portable Baby Crib

cheap baby cribsA portable crib would be the best place for baby to sleep when you are away from home. They can be easily transported anywhere as they usually have wheels and can be easily folded into a compact size. A portable crib is usually made of wood or metal. Vertical slats may also be found on its sides.

Portable cribs became so popular recently especially to families who love travelling. It is most useful when visiting a friend or relative or going for a vacation. Although it is designed for temporary use, it can be considered as an indispensable piece of furniture for baby.

Portable cribs are usually used for babies weighing not more than 30 pounds so it should not really be used as a substitute for a permanent crib.

Selecting and Buying a Portable Crib

baby crib setsWhen selecting a Portable crib, safety features should be your number one consideration. Portable cribs do not follow same safety standards as the full size cribs. As a matter of fact, the manufacturers often use same safety standards required for baby playpens. As parents, you must ensure that the portable crib you are purchasing is safe for baby.

To ensure that you are not putting baby on danger, always buy from a reputable dealer. These people are aware of recent recall notices and would regularly remove unsafe cribs from their inventory. Always make sure that the portable crib has not been included in any recall. Take time to fill-out the registration form and always check the manufacturer’s website for any recent notices about the particular model.

Here are some guidelines that one must follow when selecting and buying a portable crib:

baby cribs and convertible beds1. Be sure that it is constructed using high grade material. The construction should be sturdy and would not sway when an adult leans on it.

2. It should have a smooth finish so as baby would not hurt his or her fingers.

3. If it requires self assembly, be sure that there is no mesh or loose threads that baby might swallow and might create choking.

4. No gaps should be found between the mattress and the crib and the thickness of the mattress pad should not exceed one inch in depth. Mattress should be firm and should not leave any mark on it when you press down your index finger.

5. Bolts, screws, and nuts should not be sticking out and there should be no plastic coverings that is in danger of falling off.

6. Be sure that your pinky finger cannot be inserted into the mesh spaces easily. If it is, the mesh size may be too big for baby.

7. Top rails should be self-locking and automatically latch in place to prevent accidents. Locking mechanism should be difficult enough for baby to undo.

8. If a portable crib comes with wheels, be sure that it can be locked and will remain immobilized when baby is in it.

Many portable cribs also have drop sides and adjustable mattress levels like the regular cribs. They also come in different styles and designs but they may come in slightly smaller size than a regular crib. Almost all of them weigh lighter than the regular crib so that they can be easier to fold up and transport. Be sure that you try to fold them by yourself before you buy.

Baby Bedding and Baby Furniture

baby play penMany parents only have a vague idea of all of the baby gear they’ll need for their baby. The basics include a car seat (assuming you have a vehicle), a stroller (unless you plan to wear your baby in a wrap, and even then most babies are too heavy to wear by the time they are a year old), an infant seat or high chair (somewhere to place your baby for feeding time and snack time), and a place to sleep.

baby gates and play pensDepending on the parent you speak with, you’ll find that there are many different options for what a baby should sleep in. You have your standard crib, a playpen (often referred to as a Pack ‘n Play, which is actually the name of Graco’s playpen and not a synonym for playpen or activity yard), bassinets, Moses baskets (these are only appropriate for babies who are not sitting up) and cradles. There are also in-bed and bedside cots for those parents who wish to co-sleep with their babies. These sleeping choices are perfect and convenient solutions for breastfeeding mothers, as they put baby within arm’s reach. Not having to get up and go across the room or down the hall for a hungry baby at two in the morning is always a relief!

large baby playpenMost parents will tell you that the best solution for sleeping is a crib outfitted with luxury baby bedding. A crib grows with your baby, and many convert into toddler beds and even full-sized or queen-sized beds. The crib is the queen of baby furniture, simply because it lasts so long and provides a truly safe haven for your baby.

Cribs feature adjustable bottoms and sides. This means that infants can have their crib mattresses raised up so that Mom and Dad don’t have to lean too far into the crib to pick them up or place them down. For babies who are pulling themselves up and young toddlers that are standing, the crib mattress can be dropped to a very low height, so that there is no risk of the child being able to push themselves over the railing and out of the crib.

Once you do select the appropriate Baby Furniture for your child to sleep in, you’ll need to think about baby bedding. Luxury baby bedding is one choice that many new parents, mothers especially, will often make room in their budget to splurge on. This is because baby bedding is a once-in-a-lifetime investment for your baby, as you only need one dust ruffle, one crib bumper and headboard cover, one blanket or quilt and a few different crib sheets.

Not only is luxury beautiful, it also feels super soft on your baby’s skin. While Luxury Baby Bedding is often more expensive than standard crib bedding, you’re paying for exceptional style and quality materials that will last with even the most active of babies.

Toddler Travel Beds and Play Yards

Above you see four great pack-n-play play yards and travel beds from cribs.com. They have a really wide selection of pack and plays, travel beds and all sorts of baby accessories. Do yourself a favor and check out their great prices today.

Travel Beds for Toddlers

A toddler travel bed is immensely helpful for a single mother. A working lady may need to go for a vacation travel or on official tour and now she can take her kid along easily with a portable travel bed without paying extra airfare.

graco play pensToddler travel beds are becoming an increasingly popular child sleep aid for parents on the go or for kids who need a little extra comfort in an unfamiliar environment.

Travel beds for toddlers serve as a safe alternative to a large, unknown sleeping area that a child may come across when staying in a hotel room during a vacation or spending the night at grandma’s house. The versatility of toddler travel bed not only extends outside of the home, but also allows children to sleep safely while in a transitional bedding phase.

A toddler travel bed is also a great way to accommodate a child who has outgrown the space of their crib, but is not yet big enough to spend their nights in a regular-sized bed. This convenient option also allows a parent to save money by bringing a travel bed into their home for a lower price rather than buying an "in-between" bed.

When it comes to choosing a proper travel bed for a toddler, there are plenty of options to consider. To provide ample airy comfort that will send your little one soaring into dreamland, there are inflatable air mattress beds that allow children to drift quietly off to sleep. I suggest that new parents should have childs portable travel bed because it helps in many ways.

Sometimes a simple cot selection will also do for your toddler, while lightweight play yards have been known to serve as a safe and fun opportunity for sleep. Below are a few suggestions regarding different types of travel beds available for toddlers:

Portable Air Bed

baby in the play penMany parents have experienced the ease and uniqueness of having portable travel bedding in their possession. When one is filled with air, a helpful sleep aid is created for children who are traveling on vacation, visiting a friend’s house, or would like to sleep in different parts of their own home. With raised edges (similar to a lifeboat), this bedding choice makes sure a safe night of slumber awaits your little one.

Many air mattress models come with an air pump (sometimes wireless, rechargeable, and/or hands free). Most air beds inflate in less than a minute. This option is so handy that it can even accompany toddlers on a camping trip and make taking a nap at their daycare center much more comfortable.

Peapod Travel Bed

full size play penTo keep infants safe and secure, the Peapod Travel Bed is an inflatable mattress that offers a little extra in its design. Surrounded by a zipper pocket, the mattress is covered by a fold-down design that pops up and twists into a comforting shelter for your toddler. When placed into its compact position, the Peapod is easy to transport, as well as clean. The sleeping pad is washable and the entire unit can be used for both indoor and outdoor adventures.

Additional Travel Bed Items

There are also different items on the market that allow parents to transform various bed sizes into a safe environment for a toddler to sleep in.

For example, inflatable bed rails are easy to pack and are often fashioned to fit any twin bed. For a sturdier product, there are also toddler travel bedside rails that are small enough to pack in suitcases, yet large enough to alter beds that are incompatible with the size of a toddler.

Delta travel baby bed: Delta Enterprise Crib-to-Bed has innovative designs like a foldaway crib to making traveling easier, and it costs around USD 260.

Child portable travel bed is also immensely helpful for single mothers. A business woman on vacation or an official tour can take her kid easily with portable travel bed without paying extra airfare.

Also a bouncy seat is wonderful.

Our list of don’t needs

Bottle warmers hot tap water run over a bottle works just as well.

Easy to hold bottles; the ones with the hole in the center are impossible to clean.

A changing table… A changing mat is awesome! used one all the time to change where ever I happened to be. Far more convenient.

Many of those tiny cute out-fits. Buy a few you love for special events and pictures. Babies grow fast and these out-fits may only fit for a month.

There are many more needs and don’t needs. It is a personal thing for each of us. This is just a general guide.
